SPECTACULAR TALL SHIPS AND WHALE OF A HERD OF 21 ORCAS

CHRONICLE THREE FERRY Ornithological PRIDE OF BILBAO

Aupa all forgive the delay, I could not do before. Also going to be the first time I go to write a chronicle of three consecutive trips. I show you how no two voyages equal.

On 23, 26 and 29 August I went out to sea in many other sea adventures ... but in all three cases the bows have been completely different. This slang sailor, who referred to the unpredictability of the sea, can be used well after seeing the results and compare the observations.

The spectacular results of previous years, and even days, makes many people forget that the sea and the wilderness is not a zoo or a dolphin, in which animals are permanently deprived of freedom for your enjoyment. The nature sometimes becomes capricious and unpredictable. That we have very internalized naturalists and ornithologists, and over whether the fate twists ... the results can be quite different.

The importance of the ferry Pride of Bilbao is the ecosystem that goes through during the day. Birds and mammals are not for nothing at sea or in certain areas. Environmental variations, water temperature and food availability all make that focus more in some areas than others.

This year has been exceptional on the observation of the great whales. As in previous years our sea was dotted with whales, just an hour of leaving port were Biscay, this year the bulk of these are in Gran Sol (against Ireland), and thirty is feeding this month near French ravines ... where they coincide with many whales and fish.

And it looks great on the first day, where even do rough seas, always dark in the aftermath of the French cliffs. What does this mean ... very simple ... if this area has not been driven by day ... we are deprived of these observations. And that is demonstrated with the results of the two exits later ... where 26 fin whales we saw August (four near the boat) and 29 August ... eleven.

On August 23 we start from Santurtzi seventy-one eager ornithologists bugs. At first the weather conditions were not the most likely to have good sightings of seabirds, where the wind from the northeast rather than seabirds you bring them out into the Atlantic. However, sightings of cetaceans in the Dutch from the previous day with a dozen whales and good numbers of Cuvier's beaked whales sighted throughout the month did not bode rare.

"Bad Bow" we had on this journey began just an hour after leaving ... something totally unpredictable. A medical emergency forced the ship to turn around and go back to port. Here we lost three wonderful hours we determined the rest of the trip. The ship was forced to dock in port to allow entry of an ambulance and transferred urgently to a pregnant woman, who ultimately lost her son.

These three precious hours we determined the rest of the trip. No dusk the first day in the aftermath of the French cliffs and arrived late on the third day, which deprived us of the opportunity to enjoy the majesty of the fin, we reached a lot of time navigating the Canal, that although they have their good parts about Prions and small cetaceans is always a day much more relaxed

The first day we saw only, or rather, they saw some lucky, a fin whale. At least we had the consolation of seeing 4 Cuvier's beaked whales, and as a copy of several tons in weight was three huge jumps with amazing agility. In birds we have some excellent observations capirotada Shearwaters flying alongside the boat with the ashen and grim.

Cuvier's beaked whales

birds seen during three trips, except for the sightings in in numbers of cetaceans have been very similar ... in general ... especially the second and third. The only thing different that has seen have been Wilson's storm-petrels. The poor suffered while the second trip, 28, around to NW F7-8 and waves of 6 meters to the sea full of shearwaters next day ... the trip 29 and again ... sea \u200b\u200bfull of life and thousands of shearwaters ... from which we get to have more than 1,200 Cinderellas, hundreds of capirotada, dozens of dark and Sabin Wilson's storm-petrels and some ..

The absence of setbacks for hours during the two subsequent trips gave us good observations of marine mammals both in number of species and specimens. Where noted the observations of large common minke whale as 9 and 11 copies, with 11 Cuvier beaked whales in one afternoon, pilot whales and common dolphins of three species with good numbers ... ... listing about 280 dolphins in 7 groups ..

The latter days of sailing, 24, 27 and woke August 30 or before or O'uessant past. The three days were very different from the first rain, a good sea fog the second and third. Yet all three had a common denominator. Was virtually the same in birds and cetaceans. We identified two species of storm-petrels and Leach ... the most abundant, common. Parasites and skuas also likely and young Raber acharranado dark phase (which for some was a parasite of a book) on 24 ... and security in the identification of skuas Raber, who managed to photograph the following. Yes, fell four species of skuas.

storm petrel

fulmars, kittiwakes, herring the first trip, gabions, great skua, common and arctic terns, cormorants, Whimbrel, whiskered. In watching the ubiquitous porpoises and minke whales.

minke

As curiosity large dead whale that was sighted on 24, and was escorted by a small group of Prions who ate with him and seven days ... later we found him again with more Prions one hour before turning around ... O'uessant current took him out into the Gulf.

Yes there have been major differences on the third day. In the three prevailing strong wind that lifted many sheep and convenient observation difficult groups of porpoises mainly O'uessant height. In birds almost you saw the same ... much fulmar, great skua Pomarine, parasite and large gulls sabine and kittiwakes, storm petrel, phalaropes grosbeak, Manx shearwaters and some alcid ....

where the result has been radically disparate platform we have in French and canyons ... but with a common denominator in the three days ... the sunfish and the incessant charges of common dolphins kept us very entertained until the arrival of the hills.

common dolphins

Well, while the first trip we arrived very late, almost night and watched some common whales ... the second sailed three and half hours on the abyssal plain and saw 7 more common minke whales, striped dolphins, pilot whales and some beaked whales.

long-finned pilot whales

certainly the best day of the new browser, was the last day of the third voyage. And curiously arrived an hour before dusk in the canyons ... demonstrating that this of the sea is a little luck. This day the sea was teeming with marine life ... and we saw 8 species of cetaceans (two more than ours in three days) ... and also dropped a whale ... the fin whale.

However, I still tremble taps, was impressive crossing with a herd of more than 21 orcas. I've made over 95 trips and in the 16-year history in marine observation of this boat, has been the largest killer whale made. Here you can see how unpredictable and exciting of the sea. And I was lucky to be at that time. 8 male, two female pups and the rest ... and the boat moving very slowly (it did on purpose) to drool thoroughly with these beautiful creatures.

Orcas

In this orgy of life add a dozen gray whales, most of 600 common dolphins, mean hundreds of bottlenose dolphins and listing, the herd of 40 pilot whales and porpoises thirty ..

So I can only say to Edgar Melo, José Manuel Zugasti and Diaz-Otero (seventy years watching birds), Jose Miguel Guerra, Silvia Domínguez, Nicolás Weidberg ... that whale, Iban Cervigón, Kakamas esssooosss Mario Ramos, Olga Tapiador, Aitor Olaso, Fátima López, Joaquín Santiuste, Sergio Ramos, Germain Peña, Paloma Fernández, David Cañizares, Javier Pérez, the artist Antonia Zamora, Raul Galindo, Jose Antonio Canizares, Jose Francisco Garcia, Jose Luis Jara, Ana Belén Plaza, Sergio Lara, Aitziber Casado, Juan Carlos Bellide, Nuria Abad Siro Gonzalez, Julia Jimenez, David Alvarez ... ... Matxalen Pauly, Marcel Gil, Maria Guadalupe Sanchez, Annabella Hamlet, Aitor Leiza ... the road, Maria Isabel Romero, Jesús Menéndez (junkie of the sea) , olga Nijón, Abel Martín, María Isabel Sancho, Alex Onrubia ... reborn from its ashes, Maria Leon, Juan Carlos Pastrana, the ubiquitous Oscar calls, Francis Turner, Ignacio Olaso ...
